This is an ongoing action.

Local food is fresher and tastes better than food shipped long distances from other states or countries. The average supermarket vegetable travels 1300+ miles from farm to table. With each local purchase, you ensure that more of your money spent on food goes to the farmer, and in turn the local economy.

What it costs:

Buying from a local farmers market or food stand doesn’t cost much more than what you would spend at the supermarket. If every SouthCoast household invested just $10 a week in buying locally produced food, millions of dollars every year would stay here in our own community to help support jobs.

How to do it:

  1. Select “Add to My Challenge” and pledge to buy food and goods locally
  2. Use the Southeastern MA Agricultural Partnerships online food - guide to find a farmers market or food stand near you!
  3. Snap a photo of yourself at your local farmers market or food stand and send it to info@southcoastenergychallenge.org along with your name and address to be eligible to win a SouthCoast Energy Challenge t-shirt!
  4. Now, congratulate yourself for saving energy and money and making a difference in your South Coast Community!
